Knicks-Pistons Preview

The New York Knicks may be without Carmelo Anthony on Wednesday night. If their reserves can repeat their latest performance and Amare Stoudemire can continue his efficient scoring, it may not matter against the hapless Detroit Pistons.

New York will be going for its second straight season sweep of Detroit - having taken the first three meetings by an average of 16.7 points - and its 11th win in 12 matchups overall.

Anthony is listed as questionable after exiting in the second quarter of a 102-97 victory over the Cavaliers on Monday with a right knee injury. The forward said it had been bothering him for several weeks, and he appeared to aggravate it when he twisted the knee and dropped to the floor.

The NBA's second-leading scorer at 28.2 points per game, Anthony said he underwent an MRI a "couple days" earlier, though the results were negative.

"It's just sore, not pain, sore and stiffness," said Anthony, who's averaged 51.9 percent shooting against the Pistons this season. "It's been going on for a while now."

New York (36-21) is 3-4 without Anthony in 2012-13, and appeared headed for another loss against Cleveland as it faced a 22-point deficit. However, the Knicks' bench - one of the best in the league with 39.8 points per game - outscored the starters 70-32 en route to the victory.

Stoudemire led the way with a season high-tying 22 points after he was benched for the final eight minutes of a 99-93 loss to Miami on Sunday. Coach Mike Woodson said before Monday's game that he needed to get more minutes for Stoudemire, who has been capped at 30.0 per game because of offseason knee surgery but is averaging 23.1.

It's easy to see why Woodson wants to see more of Stoudemire with the forward making 74.5 percent from the field in his last six.

"I've been a competitor my whole career," said Stoudemire, who played a season-high 32 minutes against the Cavaliers. "I've had a lot of success in this league so far. I know how the game is played. Whenever my number's called I'll be ready and tonight I was ready."

The Pistons (23-39) have dropped five of six and have little chance of making the playoffs. That leaves coach Lawrence Frank with the task of keeping his young squad focused for the final 20 games.

"We have to really, really be committed because it only gets harder," Frank told the Pistons' official website after a 114-75 loss at San Antonio on Sunday. "Not our motivation, but the other teams we're playing are vying for things. They ain't messing around and we have to come with that same mentality. If we ever want to be a playoff team, you can't wait to adopt that mentality."

Detroit's defense continues to be weakened by the absence of rookie big man Andre Drummond, who has missed 12 consecutive games with a fractured tailbone. The Pistons are allowing 102.5 points per contest in that span after giving up 96.7 before Drummond's injury.

While the Knicks may be without Anthony, center Marcus Camby played Monday for the first time since Jan. 10 after recovering from plantar fasciitis. He was limited to seven minutes.

Knicks beat Pistons 87-77 without Anthony

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Carmelo Anthony was recovering from an injury for New York, and Detroit's top two big men were also out.

The Knicks were ready to be aggressive, but the initial result was ugly - 11 turnovers in the first quarter.

"Sometimes you can try to over-attack," guard Raymond Felton said. "Sometimes you've got to take what the defense gives you no matter who's playing."

The Knicks settled down after that sloppy start, and although they relied more than expected on their outside shooting, they eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter for an 87-77 victory Wednesday night.

Felton scored 26 points, and New York went on a 16-0 run in the fourth to put away the game.

Anthony sat out after injuring his right knee Monday. The Pistons were without big man Greg Monroe, who has a sore left ankle, and Detroit coach Lawrence Frank missed the game because of a personal matter.

The Pistons have also been without 6-foot-11 rookie Andre Drummond, who has a stress fracture in his back.

"I told our guys after the game that I have nothing negative to say," said Detroit assistant Brian Hill, who filled in for Frank. "I thought we played some difficult lineups out there tonight. I thought they gave us every ounce of energy that they could possibly give us."

The Knicks overcame their early turnovers and led 44-38 at the half. Brandon Knight scored 17 points for the Pistons and led a third-quarter rally, but Detroit managed only 12 points in the fourth.

The Knicks have won five of six heading into Thursday's home game against Oklahoma City.

"Melo is a big piece of our ballclub and we have had games this year where he missed and we have been successful," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "That is the sign of a true team, a team that is willing to step up and make plays and win regardless of who is in uniform."

Amare Stoudemire took advantage of Detroit's depleted interior, scoring 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but Tyson Chandler scored only two points.

New York ended up taking 35 shots from 3-point range against the undermanned Pistons, making 13.

The Knicks trailed 73-71 when they went on their decisive run, which included two 3-pointers by J.R. Smith, one by Jason Kidd and another by Felton to cap it.

Smith scored 20 points.

Detroit's Jose Calderon had 10 points and 16 assists.

Hill joked before the game that he might need a blindfold and a cigarette because of the difficult task ahead. The Pistons trailed by 15 in the second quarter before a mild rally before halftime.

"It just happens throughout the season, when guys go out with injuries," Knight said. "It made it a little bit tougher as far as trying to find a flow for our team, but I think we did a good job just playing the game and figuring it out."

Detroit controlled the start of the third as well. Knight scored 11 of his team's 13 points in one stretch and gave the Pistons a 65-55 lead when he made a 3-pointer with 2:44 left, but Detroit didn't score for the rest of the quarter.

Felton scored the last seven points of the period to tie it at 65.

The Knicks also scored the first six points of the fourth, but Detroit answered with eight in a row and took a 73-71 lead on two free throws by Rodney Stuckey.

"The game of basketball is about runs," Felton said. "Those guys put up a good fight. They started hitting some shots, making plays, getting defensive stops, but we reversed it at the end of the third in the last five or six minutes and then in the fourth."

NOTES: The Knicks finished with 21 turnovers to Detroit's 20. ... Detroit's Jason Maxiell scored 14 points, including three early dunks. ... In the final minute, Knight drove and missed a dunk, and the ball bounced all the way back to the other basket, where the Pistons retrieved it. Kidd then made a steal, and New York ran out the clock.

THE FACTS: Point guard Raymond Felton had 26 points as the New York Knicks overcame the absence of Carmelo Anthony and a season-high 21 turnovers for a 87-77 win over the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Wednesday. Anthony, the NBA's second-leading scorer, missed the game with stiffness and soreness in his right knee. Amar'e Stoudemire had 22 points and J.R. Smith added 20 for New York (37-21), which has won seven straight over Detroit. The Knicks have won five of their last six overall, while the Pistons (23-40), led by Brandon Knight's 17 points, lost for the sixth time in seven games. Detroit's leading scorer, center Greg Monroe, sat out because of a left ankle sprain suffered in practice on Tuesday.

QUOTABLE: "I'm still kind of upset at myself for having seven turnovers. Being a point guard, scoring is something I can do but it's not my number one thing. It's to take care of the ball and run the team. I had a lot of silly, silly turnovers tonight but at the end of the day, we still put that 'W' in the column, so that's all that counts."

THE STAT: 18 -- coming in, the Knicks had committed the fewest turnovers in the league, averaging 11.9 per game. They had 11 alone in the first quarter, including five by Felton. New York's previous high for a game was 18 turnovers, which happened twice, most recently against Miami on March 3. The Knicks settled down and only made six turnovers in the second half.

TURNING POINT: The Knicks had a pair of 16-0 runs in the second half. The first of those spanned the third and fourth quarters after they had fallen behind by 10. The second came after an 8-0 Pistons spurt that gave Detroit its last lead at 73-71. Smith sparked the decisive outburst with two 3-pointers and Jason Kidd and Felton also hit from long range.

QUOTABLE II: "He turned it on, offensively. They were playing off him a little on pick-and-rolls and he started to exploit it."

HOT: Smith entered the game ranked third among NBA reserves in scoring at 16.1 points per game, behind only the Los Angeles Clippers' Jamal Crawford (17.0) and New Orleans' Ryan Anderson (16.7). After a subpar first half, Smith turned it on with four second-half 3-pointers.

NOT: Detroit's backup guards, Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum, combined for just seven points on 2-for-13 shooting. They normally average a combined 20 points. They also had four turnovers as New York's bench outscored Detroit's backups 50-11.

NOTABLE: New York hasn't lost a season series to Detroit since 2006-07. The Knicks won the four meetings this season by an average of 15 points. .. Anthony, who has led the Knicks in scoring 43 times this season, is questionable to play against Oklahoma City on Thursday. The Knicks are 4-4 in games he has missed. ... Monroe missed his first game due to injury in his career. He had played in 208 consecutive games. In his absence, the Pistons used just their sixth different lineup this season. ... Detroit coach Lawrence Frank missed the game due to a personal matter. Top assistant Brian Hill ran the team. ... Pistons reserve forward Charlie Villanueva was also unavailable because of a sore left hamstring. Rookie center Andre Drummond has missed the last 13 games with a stress fracture in his fifth lumbar vertebra.
