Pistons-Trail Blazers Preview

Based on their current play and recent history in Portland, the Detroit Pistons likely won't have an easy time trying to earn their first victory in March.

Looking to avoid matching a season high with an eighth straight loss, the Pistons will also try to end a four-game road slide against the Trail Blazers on Saturday night.

While Detroit (23-44) remains offensively inconsistent, it's allowed 105.7 points and 51.3 percent shooting while going 0-7 this month. Golden State shot 56.9 percent to hand the Pistons their 10th loss in 11 games, 105-97 on Wednesday.

Detroit, which started the season 0-8, has three losing streaks of at least six games.

Guard Stephen Curry scored inside and out to finish with 31 points and help the Warriors shoot the second-highest percentage against Detroit this season.

"It was a lot of ins and outs," Pistons guard Will Bynum said, "but defensively we still have to be a whole lot better."

Hampered by injuries to the likes of starting guard Brandon Knight (ankle) and key reserve Andre Drummond (tailbone), only eight Pistons played. Rodney Stuckey scored 22 while starting in place of Knight, who could miss a second straight game. Center Greg Monroe had 13 and went 4 of 16 from the field.

Monroe is shooting 34.6 percent while averaging 13.0 points - 2.9 fewer than his average - in four games since missing one with a sprained ankle.

"It's not like I'm shooting a lot of jump shots or chucking up threes," said Monroe, who shoots 48.0 percent - one of the worst marks by a starting center in 2012-13. "I have to do a better job than that. When guys are playing hard and giving it all they got, then I've got to be able to finish."

Knight scored 26 and Monroe added 20 with 10 rebounds in a 108-101 home victory over Portland on Nov. 26. The Pistons, however, have averaged 84.0 points and allowed the Trail Blazers to shoot 50.2 percent in the last four at Portland.

Detroit is 8-24 away from home, and giving up 110.2 points on 52.9 percent shooting during its current five-game road slide.

The Trail Blazers (30-34) have averaged 104.0 and shot 48.1 percent while winning eight of 11 at the Rose Garden. Rookie of the Year contender Damian Lillard had 26 points with 10 assists and LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 with 10 boards in Thursday's 105-90 home win over banged-up New York.

Portland stepped up the tempo to close the second quarter on a 13-0 run then kept control while holding the Knicks to 32.6 percent shooting in the second half.

"What we were talking about and wanted to do, we were finally able to do it and we saw that it really worked in our favor," Lillard told the Trail Blazers' official website about getting out in the open court en route to shooting 51.3 percent. "I think that was how we were able to keep the lead."

Lillard has averaged 24.8 points and shot 54.5 percent while scoring at least 20 in eight straight contests - one shy of the franchise record set by Calvin Natt in 1979-80.

However, he was held to 12 on 4-of-18 shooting at Detroit.

Playing through ankle and hand issues, Aldridge is averaging 31.0 points on 58.9 percent (33 of 56) shooting in the last three against the Pistons.

Aldridge has 31, Portland beats Detroit 112-101.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Portland Trail Blazers aren't giving up yet.

The Blazers are still in a crowded fight for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Utah Jazz are a half-game back of the Los Angeles Lakers for the eighth and final spot, while Portland and Dallas are three games out.

Taking advantage of Saturday night's visit by the struggling Pistons, the Blazers got 31 points and 12 rebounds from LaMarcus Aldridge to hand Detroit its eighth straight loss with a 112-101 victory.

But the Blazers are now staring at a five-game road trip, which kicks off Monday in Philadelphia.

"This is a make-or-break road trip for us," Aldridge said. "I keep saying, we're right there. If we play good on this trip than anything is possible."

The Blazers won two of a three-game homestand.

Rodney Stuckey had a season-high 32 points for the Pistons, who have yet to win a game in March. They've lost 11 of their last 12.

After trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Blazers took a 90-81 lead on Nicolas Batum's 3-pointer with 8:33 remaining in the game. Portland extended the lead to 99-87 on J.J. Hickson's dunk.

The Pistons scored 10 in a row to close within 99-97 on Will Bynum's running jumper with 2:54 left, but Batum answered with another 3-pointer. After Stuckey made a layup, Aldridge's hook shot ended Detroit's threat and put the Blazers in front 104-99 with 1:45 left.

"We did not come up with plays at the end of the game," Pistons forward Kyle Singler said. "To their credit, Portland played well. They are a tough team to beat at home and when Aldridge is playing like he did tonight, they're tough."

The Blazers (31-34) have won nine of their last 12 at the Rose Garden and were coming off a 105-90 victory at home over the Knicks on Thursday night.

"Hopefully it's a little momentum for us going out on the road," Blazers coach Terry Stotts said.

Detroit (23-45) was coming off a 105-97 loss at Golden State on Wednesday. The Pistons were without guard Brandon Knight for the second straight game because of a sprained left ankle. Knight is averaging 13.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Detroit went ahead 21-18 on Jose Calderon's 3-pointer late in the first quarter, as Portland sat Aldridge because of two early fouls. The Pistons extended the lead to 28-20 on Jonas Jerebko's layup.

Bynum's jumper pushed Detroit's lead to 50-41, but Portland scored the final six points of the half to close the margin to 57-52. Stuckey led all players with 17 first-half points.

Stuckey, who sustained a bad cut to his forehead during the game after a head-to-head collision, has been starting in place of Knight.

"I've been given the opportunity to do this the last couple of games, and it's been working," he said. "But more importantly, though, we lost. We just have to come out and get more stops defensively, because that's what hurt us tonight."

The Blazers opened the second half with an 11-2 run, capped by Aldridge's jumper, to go in front 63-59.

Greg Monroe's layup pulled the Pistons into a 73-all tie before Bynum's high-arching running jumper gave Detroit back the lead.

Portland opened the fourth quarter with Aldridge's jump shot to go ahead 79-75. It was Aldridge's fifth game this season with more than 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Hickson had 18 points and 15 rebounds and all of Portland starters were in double figures.

Bynum had 23 points off the bench.

The Pistons continue to play under assistant coach Brian Hill. Head coach Lawrence Frank did not accompany the team on the road trip to attend to be with his wife, who is ill.

"As far as the character and the work of our guys, I thought they played their hearts out tonight," Hill said.

Notes: Singler is a native Oregonian and led South Medford High School to the state championship his senior year. He was greeted with warm applause from the Rose Garden crowd during introductions, but wound up with just four points for Detroit. "I didn't really play up to my level but it was fun playing in front of this crowd," said Singer, who had about a dozen family members and friends at the game. ... Director Gus Van Sant, Academy Award nominee for Good Will Hunting and Milk, was at the game. ... The Pistons won the other meeting between the teams this season, 108-101 on Nov. 26 in Detroit. ... The Blazers have won five straight against Detroit at the Rose Garden.

THE FACTS: LaMarcus Aldridge scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and front-line mate J.J. Hickson collected 18 points and 15 boards in Portland's 112-101 victory over Detroit on Saturday night at the Rose Garden, Nicolas Batum contributed 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and three blocked shots for the Trail Blazers (31-34), who rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to win their second straight game. Rodney Stuckey scored a season-high 32 points and Will Bynum came off the bench to add 23 for the Pistons (23-45), who lost for the eighth straight time and finished their road trip 0-4.

QUOTABLE: "I just felt good tonight. I started kind of slow, but in the second half, I found my rhythm. I guess I was feeling it."

THE STAT: Detroit shot 58.1 percent in the first half and 52.6 for the game. Portland was 0-for-14 against opponents shooting better than 50 percent this season.

TURNING POINT: Detroit led 57-52 at the half, but Portland started the third quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 61-57 advantage.

QUOTABLE II: "No tooth, and now I have to go get stitches. I'm good, though."

HOT: Aldridge was 13-for-21 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line and was sensational in a third-quarter stretch in which he knocked down four straight tough jumpers.

NOT: Lillard had 14 points and seven assists but was 3-for-12 from the field. In his two games against Detroit, the rookie point guard 7-for-30.

GOOD MOVE: When Aldridge got two early fouls, Portland coach Terry Stotts went to little-used rookie Joel Freeland. The 6-foot-11 Brit rewarded him with eight points on 4-for-6 shooting and two rebounds in seven first-quarter minutes.

GOOD MOVE II: Batum came from behind to get all three of his blocked shots -- all against Detroit rookie Kyle Singler.

QUOTABLE III: "During the game, I was joking with him. I said, 'I think I'm rubbing off on you.' "

NOTABLE: Hickson has 37 double-doubles, tied for second in the NBA behind Golden State's David Lee. Aldridge has 31 double-doubles and five games with at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and 50 percent shooting -- tied with Miami's LeBron James for the league lead in that category. ... Aldridge, James and Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant are the only players with 1,300 points and 500 rebounds. ... It was Portland's 12th win when trailing at halftime. ... Guard Brandon Knight, who scored 26 points in Detroit's 108-101 win over Portland on Nov. 26, missed his second straight game with a sprained ankle.
