Pistons-Bulls Preview

After a disappointing end to their longest winning streak in two months, a matchup with the sputtering Detroit Pistons should help the Chicago Bulls bounce back.

While they're likely to be short-handed again, the Bulls return home Sunday night looking for an 18th straight victory over the Pistons.

Chicago (39-32) matched a season high with its third straight win when it ended Miami's 27-game run Wednesday, and appeared to be on its way to another victory Saturday with a 12-point lead in Dallas with 3:33 to go.

Instead, the Bulls were denied their fourth straight win as the Mavericks closed the contest on a 15-1 run and Dirk Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to give Dallas a 100-98 victory.

"This was definitely a tough loss," guard Kirk Hinrich said. "We just didn't finish it out."

Chicago's streak - its longest since Jan. 21-25 - had come at an unlikely time, considering the team continues to be without a number of key players. Derrick Rose (knee) and Richard Hamilton (lower back) aren't expected to return Sunday, while Joakim Noah (right foot) and Marco Belinelli (abdominal strain) will be game-time decisions.

Noah's return could be big for the Bulls since he's averaged 19.8 points and 17.5 rebounds in his last four games against the Pistons.

Nate Robinson, who hit all seven of his 3-point attempts on the way to 25 points Saturday, scored nine of his 11 points early in the fourth to lead the Bulls back from 17 down for their 17th straight victory over Detroit in an 85-82 home win on Jan. 23. That's the league's second-longest active streak against one opponent.

The Bulls haven't lost to the Pistons since Dec. 23, 2008, and have reeled off 13 consecutive regular-season victories at the United Center over Detroit since Feb. 24, 2006.

Carlos Boozer heads into this contest averaging 20.8 points on 58.7 percent shooting and 12.5 boards over his last four games.

Luol Deng has totaled 53 points and has hit 8 of 15 from 3-point range in his last two contests, but has averaged just 8.8 on 32.1 percent shooting in his last five in this series.

The Bulls have scored 101.0 per game - 8.0 above their season average - and made 30 of 69 (43.5 percent) from beyond the arc in their last three. They should be able to keep it going against the Pistons, who have allowed 107.3 points and 42.8 percent shooting from 3-point range in their last nine games.

After trailing Toronto by one point at the half Friday, Detroit (24-49) was outscored 36-15 in the third quarter on the way to a 99-82 home loss.

Jonas Jerebko had 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting to lead the Pistons, who have lost 12 of 13 this month.

"It just doesn't add up when you're competitive for a half," coach Lawrence Frank said. "It just snowballed on us. This is embarrassing."

Rookie Andre Drummond could give the team a lift after scoring 17 on 8-of-10 shooting in 19 minutes in his first action since missing 22 games because of a stress fracture in his lower back.

The Pistons, 9-26 on the road, are averaging 85.4 points over their last five games overall, and 80.9 in their last seven in Chicago.

Deng's 28 help Bulls win 18th straight vs. Pistons

CHICAGO (AP) Jimmy Butler and the Chicago Bulls relied on their hustle to keep their streak alive against the Detroit Pistons.

Luol Deng scored 28 points, Butler and Nate Robinson each added 16, and the Bulls beat Detroit 95-94 to extend their winning streak to 18 straight against the Pistons.

The Bulls rallied from a 13-point deficit to tie the score 78-all with 9:27 remaining on Butler's dunk after a steal. Robinson then fed Deng for a layup and an 80-78 lead, Chicago's first advantage since 1-0.

The Bulls came up with four of their 10 steals in the fourth quarter, including three by Butler.

"We dodged a bullet," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We were fortunate, got out of a hole. ... We were just trying to find a way in the end. I thought it was the hustle plays."

Rodney Stuckey scored 25 points and Greg Monroe added 18 points for the Pistons, who have not beaten Chicago since Dec. 23, 2008.

Deng and Robinson each hit 3-pointers to extend the Bulls' lead to 91-84. Stuckey's layup cut Chicago's lead to one with 1:27 left before Deng had a layup for a 94-91 lead. Charlie Villaneuva missed a 3 with 5.9 seconds left and Daequan Cook made a free throw.

Stuckey made a 3 before the buzzer for the final margin.

Butler bounced back from a disappointing game after he scored four points on 1-of-8 shooting in Saturday's 100-98 loss to Dallas.

"It was tough. After 2 to 3 hours of sleep, I got here super early to shoot some free throws and some jumpers," Butler said. "I don't want to play like that. Nobody wants to play like that."

Chicago also rallied from 17-point deficits in each of its two previous games against Detroit this season. The Pistons last defeated the Bulls at the United Center on Feb. 24, 2006.

"We haven't won too many against them," Monroe said. "You want to end that streak. But we want to get any win right now versus any team."

Detroit shot 50 percent (36 for 72) from the field while the Bulls shot 40 percent (30 for 76).

"We had some possessions on both ends you'd like to have back," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "But if we'll give ourselves a chance, it's a whole different spirit and intent compared to the way we played against Minnesota and Toronto. We have eight more opportunities to grow as a group."

The Pistons jumped out to leads of 9-1 and 18-5, and led 24-20 after the first quarter. Cook hit a 3-pointer and a free throw with 15.5 seconds left before halftime to cut Detroit's lead to 55-53.

Stuckey made a running jumper with 2.8 seconds left to put the Pistons up four at the break.

Detroit shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, while the Bulls were at 43 percent. Stuckey led the Pistons with 16 points and Deng led Chicago with 12.

Chicago also struggled with free throws, missing 13 of 40.

Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson each added 11 points for the Bulls and Cook finished with 10.

Villanueva had 14 and Jose Calderon added 11 for the Pistons, who went 1-13 in March.

"We definitely got better as far as not having a big lapse that pretty much cost us a game," Monroe said. "We have to take tonight - there were a lot of good things even though we lost - and build up and get ready for Toronto tomorrow."

Robinson and Pistons forward Kyle Singler each received technical fouls and Pistons guard Brandon Knight was called for a flagrant foul with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter after Knight was called for a travel and raised his arm, hitting Butler in the face. Robinson then appeared to push Knight, and Singler and other players joined the fray before the players were separated. Butler made both free throws to cut Detroit's lead to 24-15.

Butler said he thought Knight's contact was unintentional. Robinson said he'll stick up for his teammates.

"I got my guy's back regardless," Robinson said. "I'm not really worried about technical or whatever."

Joakim Noah and Marco Belinelli sat out for the Bulls. Noah has missed five straight games for plantar fasciitis in his right foot, and Belinelli has sat out four games with a strained abdominal muscle. Thibodeau said both players are day to day. Noah had career highs of 30 points and 23 rebounds against Detroit on Dec. 7.

Will Bynum (hand) and Jason Maxiell (eye) were out for the Pistons. Maxiell remained in Detroit to get his eye examined.

Chicago went 7-7 in March.

NOTES: The NBA upgraded Gibson's shooting foul against LeBron James in the Bulls' 101-97 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday to a flagrant foul, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The victory snapped Miami's 27-game winning streak, the second longest in NBA history. "I guess we have to call the league and get clarification," Thibodeau said. "I didn't see it that way. I still don't have a good understanding of what a flagrant foul is. I thought I got some clarity last year, but apparently I didn't." ... Calderon has a tendon problem in his arm that flared up, affecting his shooting, Frank said. ... Knight returned for the Pistons from an ankle injury he suffered Friday.

THE FACTS: A Chicago Bulls victory against the Detroit Pistons has joined death and taxes on the list of inevitable things in life. The Bulls beat the Pistons 95-94 Sunday, and haven't lost to the Motor City crew since Dec. 23, 2008 -- a span of 18 games.

The streak is the best of its kind for Chicago (40-32) against the Pistons (24-50) since the mid-1990s, when they reeled off 19 consecutive victories.

At least the Pistons were competitive in this one. They led by as many as 13 points in the first quarter and a half-dozen in the fourth period before Bulls forward Luol Deng and guard Nate Robinson came to the rescue. Deng scored 13 of his game-high 28 points in the final quarter, while Robinson had five of his 16 in that span. Guard Rodney Stuckey led the visitors with 25 points, while center Greg Monroe added 18 more.

The Bulls moved into fifth place in the Eastern Conference race, percentage points ahead of the Atlanta Hawks, who were idle.

QUOTABLE: "I was concerned about this game, coming off one yesterday and understanding how important it is to be ready. We dodged a bullet. We were fortunate. We got out of a hole."

THE STAT: Since March 1, the Pistons have lost 13 of 14 games to fall 26 games below the .500 mark.

QUOTABLE II: "This isn't a one-player problem This isn't a one-coach problem. This is a team problem that we all have to share the responsibility. We all want to get this right. We'll find [the answers] whether they're here on our roster now or whether it's [someone else] in the future that will play at a whole lot more competitive level. QUOTABLE III: "That team is going through a transition. They have a lot of young players. They're trying to figure out what works for them. But there's no explanation for a streak like this, especially at this level except to say it's about attitude and execution."

TURNING POINT: Late in the fourth quarter, Deng and Robinson drained consecutive 3-pointers to give their team a 94-81 advantage. In between, Robinson missed a short jump shot, but immediately stripped forward Charlie Villanueva (14 points) of the ball before he nailed a 3-pointer.

QUOTABLE IV: "It's pretty cool being [5-foot-9] like that, because he didn't see me. It was a sneak attack from behind him."

HOT: Chicago's Jimmy Butler had 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting and 7-for-9 from the line. Stuckey scored 16 points the first half and required only 11 shots to do it. He converted 6 of his 7 field goal tries and was 3-for-4 on free throw attempts.

NOT: The scored was tied early in the fourth period when Pistons rookie forward Andre Drummond (game-high 14 rebounds) threw up back-to-back airballs at the charity line. The first attempt hit nothing except air, and the second grazed the net on the way down. He entered the game with a .361 free-throw percentage.

GOOD MOVE: Thibodeau inserted Kirk Hinrich into the game midway through the fourth. The veteran guard reined in the offense and made several key defensive plays in the stretch drive.

BAD MOVE: After Stuckey passed up a shot on a drive to the basket, which would have made it a one-point game, Villanueva misfired on a 3-pointer under pressure with six seconds on the clock. Guard Jose Calderon was on the court despite a tendon injury that limited his range of motion.

NOTABLE: The Pistons-Bulls rivalry has been in remission for years, but there were signs of life in the first period. After Pistons guard Brandon Knight inadvertently elbowed counterpart Butler across the face, Robinson stepped in to shove Knight and forward Kyler Singler before order was restored. Knight was whistled for a flagrant foul on the play. In the third quarter, Gibson poked Stuckey in the right eye while the Piston fought through a pick. ... The Bulls had more free throws (27) than the Pistons had free-throw attempts (22) in the game. ... Boozer entered the contest with averages of 20.8 points and 12.5 rebounds in his last previous four games.
